d’Huez 1860
One of the most storied climbs in cycling starts from the village of Le Bourg d’Oisans, where the D211 snakes up the Alpe d’Huez via 21 hairpin bends at an average gradient of 8.1%, to a summit of 1,860 metres.
Its been a regular feature of the Tour de France since 1952, and at least part of its fame comes from the wild enthusiasm of the estimated 500,000 fans who flock to see the riders ascend.
Despite its fame and popularity, Wikipedia drily notes it is ‘only the 56th hardest bike climb in France’. Bet it doesn’t feel that way on the 20th hairpin…
