The Video Cassette Recorder brought TV recording to the masses. It’s hard to imagine now but before the VCR, if you missed your favourite TV programme there was no second chance – it was gone forever.

With their own graphic language (1 arrow for play, 2 arrows for fast forward etc.) and special enhancements such as stereo, hi-fi sound and programmable recording times, it was like having your own tiny TV production studio.

It’s thought that the year 2001 represented peak VCR ownership, when over 75% of British homes had one – and also why there’s a big 01 in our design.
